Barnardo's in Somerset Play Ranger Project

The 3 year Barnardo’s in Somerset Play Ranger Project (2008-2011) was funded by The Big Lottery Fund through 4 district councils in Somerset. We ran 11 weekly Play Ranger sessions throughout term time and the school holidays (except Christmas and Bank Holidays). The Play Ranger Sessions took place outside, in parks and open spaces within local communities.

Play Rangers supported and encouraged children and young people to play in a way they had chosen and to extend their play through interpreting various pieces of equipment or ‘loose parts’ that the Play Rangers may have taken. Play Rangers also encouraged children to push themselves to experience challenge and adventure in their play and to try new things. Furthermore, Play Rangers linked with parents, carers and other community members to help to educate about the importance of child led free play and outdoor play opportunities.

The Barnardo’s in Somerset Play Ranger Project has impacted on individuals and communities in many ways and our achievements have included:

Supporting children and young people to experience challenge, risk and adventure in their play.

Supporting children and young people to t get involved in outdoor physical activity.

Supporting children and young people to improve their confidence, self esteem, independence and social skills.

Supporting adult members of each community to recognise the important benefits of child led outdoor, free play that may involve an element of risk, challenge and adventure.

Supporting children and young people with safeguarding or child protection issues.

Successfully working with individuals and other services in each community, working in a flexible way in order to meet the needs of each community.
